Assistant or Associate Professor, Tenure Track, CRC Tier II

The UBC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine seeks a junior group leader/principal investigator to join expanding programs in the area of single cell biology, cancer evolution and relevant machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches to data. The successful applicant will be nominated by the University for a Tier II Canada Research Chair and, upon approval of the Chair by the CRC Secretariat, will then be recommended for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (appropriate rank to be determined based on qualifications and experience) in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, with affiliations to the relevant departments and a concurrent appointment as a Principal Investigator at commensurate level, within the BC Cancer Agency. The successful candidate will have research interests in any of the wet-lab and/or computational, “dry-lab” research domains ranging development of single cell measurement approaches, experimental approaches to cancer evolution, computational/machine learning approaches to single cell genomics and cancer evolution, artificial intelligence/deep learning approaches to complex data. The current program encompasses close collaborative research between the laboratories of Samuel Aparicio (UBC, single cell methods, breast cancer genomics evolution), Sohrab Shah (UBC, machine learning approaches, ovarian cancer genomics and evolution), Carl Hansen (UBC, microfluidics engineering), Marco Marra (UBC, Genome Science Centre), Martin Hirst (UBC, epigenomics) and close interactions with clinical programs in breast and ovarian cancer at the BC Cancer Agency. The program is well supported with physical infrastructure for single cell measurements, device manufacturing, computational capacity and in addition has access to extensive resources of curated patient tissues and patient derived xenograft models. The successful candidate will be supported with appropriate space, access to relevant research platforms and a commensurate research support startup award.

As a faculty member in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, the successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate teaching and actively participate in departmental activities. The successful candidate is required to have exceptional communication skills, a demonstrated or a demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels as well as supervision of students and trainees at all levels, a strong record of research productivity commensurate with their experience, demonstrated potential in establishing a successful research program, and a PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent awarded within the past 10 years, with postdoctoral research experience in one or more of the above listed areas. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2018, or upon a date to be mutually agreed.

Applicants must meet eligibility requirement for a CRC Tier 2 position. Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars with less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher in their field at the time of nomination.
