Five BC Cancer researchers are 2024 recipients of the Michael Smith Health Research BC’s Scholar and Health Professional-Investigator competition, receiving new funding to conduct critical research, develop innovative treatments, and translate their findings into practices that benefit people across BC.
Scholar award recipients
Scholar awards support early career health researchers, allowing them to form their own research teams and research programs. Recipients dedicate 75 per cent of their time to health research activities.
2024 BC Cancer recipient:
- Leah Lambert, executive director of Nursing and Allied Health Research and Knowledge Translation and senior scientist at BC Cancer, was awarded funding, in partnership with the BC Cancer Foundation, for the project titled, “Advancing Equitable Cancer Care: A Innovative Approach to Transformative Action in BC.”

Health Professional-Investigator award recipients
Health Professional-Investigator awards support health professionals involved in patient care to build their health research programs and train the next generation of scientists.
2024 BC Cancer recipients:
- Carol Cremin, genetic counsellor at BC Cancer, was awarded funding for the project titled, “BC Familial Pancreatic Cancer Program-Improving access to germline testing at time of diagnosis.”
- Jessica Chan, radiation oncologist with BC Cancer, was awarded funding for the project titled, “Developing equity-centered language with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples to reduce anti-Indigenous discrimination in healthcare.”
- Gang Wang, pathologist with BC Cancer, was awarded funding for the project titled, “Toward an immunohistochemical model for molecular subtyping and predicting of treatment response in bladder cancer.”
- Stephen Chia, medical oncologist and head of clinical research at BC Cancer, was awarded funding for the project titled, “Understanding and Overcoming Disparity in Care of Breast Cancer Patients in Rural British Columbia.”
